Drivers Nightmare – But works fine after going through the pain
For full disclosure, I received the Cable Matters Gigabit USB to Ethernet Adapter as part of the Amazon Vine Program.
But the reason I wanted this The Cable Matters Gigabit USB to Ethernet Adapter is that my MacBook Pro 2014 (as all newer ones too) does not have an Ethernet port and I have found myself in a number of situations where WiFi issues have meant that I missed having one. So this small adapter seemed like a perfect solution to keep in my bag with the laptop at all times.
So firstly when got the item I decided to try it out – I’m so glad I did as if I when through the pain to get this set up in a situation where I was desperate for a connection then I’m sure this review would be a lot less positive. But I expected it to ‘just work’ as most of the peripherals I use now are, but I plugged it in and the blue light came on but I could not get the link lights to come on.
I resulted to reading the instructions that came in the box and went to the link in the manual, then found the link on the website that actually took me to another site which didn’t feel the safest. But I continued to download and install the driver. This required a restart of my laptop. Then when I came back it still didn’t work – I know now that I should have gone into system preferences -> security-> general and there was a notice that I needed to give extra permission to the driver. But I ended up going to the product page and downloading another driver and going through the same steps again.
But finally, once I had the Cable Matters Gigabit USB to Ethernet Adapter working the adapter seems to work perfectly and now lives in my bag
